The geography of Annecy

Annecy is an urban conglomeration of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, in the south-French part. Administrative center and prefecture of the department of Haute-Savoie, the city is nicknamed "the treasure of the Alps of France" in the years 1916 thanks to its excellent location between the great legendary lake Annecy and the mountains of the Pre-Alps of the North.The lack of land between the lake and the massifs reduced its population in the early 1960s. But thanks to the communal association of 2017, the number increased by nearly 124,410 inhabitants. Annecy is indeed able to accommodate a large number of individuals with its large urban area which places it in 6th place among the most populated regions of France after Annemasse.Where is it? Annecy is near its lake which bears the same name. It is located 55 km from Chambéry and 42 km from Geneva. It is mainly formed by the opening of large geographic and geological meetings, including Annecy Lake, which comes after the Prealps of the Bauges limestone massif, the Aravis massif, the hills and plains of the Albanians and Genevois.The city of Annecy is divided into two areas that are characterized by the relief, urbanism and vegetation. The north and south-west of the city are flattened, encircled in the east by the mountain of Seynod and Gevrier. Currently urbanized, the birthplace of Annecy extends considerably with its infrastructure further east.The southeast of the city is dominated by Semnoz Hill. With less construction and development, the territory is surmounted by a chain of coniferous forest wooded in the 19th century on the side of the Crêt du Maure.The municipality of Annecy is located on a small area of ​​the north and west edges of its famous lake. This lacustrine position greatly benefited the emergence of the city. Thanks to the presence of the lake, channels including those of Thiou, Vassé and Saint Dominique were irrigated.
